Grandia II
Most RPG's that I have played and seen weren't all to impressive honestly. The Final Fantasy series can get dull and very tedious quickly and the others just never truly shined in the gaming world. But every once in a blue moon, an epic game can take away my heart (and time). This game came in the form of Grandia II by Ubi Soft and GameArts. This game is "Undeniably the prettiest RPG to ever grace a console" - DailyRader.
This game, in my opinion is the best turn-based RPG I have ever played. It may not has as much hype as, oh say, Final Fantasy IX for the Playstation, but to me, it seems to be a lot better. One of the strongest points in this game is its unique battle system that is a mixture of turn-based and real-time action. The system gets rid of the idea of your retarded party members staring each other down while they wait to attack. That seems very..uh...how can I say this...unrealistic. It if was me, I would not stop attacking the enemy. This game keeps your party members (4 max) in constant motion to get the more realistic feel to a battle. The menus system is a perfect and quick way to get what you want done, done. It gives you quick access to the attack, spells, and items that you might need in your travels.
The graphics in this game are beautiful. Bright and cheerful or dark and creepy, according to the mood at that point of the game, but always realistic. The characters have a lot of detail in their design and the world is very well planned out. The level of detail put into every single moment in the game is unbelievable. This is no Shenmue by any means, but in the RPG genre, this is very impressive.
This game is also has pretty good vocalization. They seemed to pick the perfect voice for the character it represents. Ryudo's seems to be a jerk, and a real rough guy. His voice seems fit that personality perfectly. Same for Elena, who is kinda ditzy and just doesn't get it. Millenia is what we like to call a %*@#! She has a major crush on Ryudo, but so does Elena. So she is very snappy. Her voice suites her perfectly also. Tio, Marag and Roan are very well planned out, but they come in farther in the game and I don't wanna tell you about them because if gives away part of the story. The voice acting doesn't sound like a robot tone surprising. It is more of a human tone (except Tio, but she is supposed to be like that). It almost sounds professional. Some of the lines in the game are comical also. Millenia and Ryudo say some pretty funny things throughout the story.
That is another strong, yet on the other hand, weak point of the game. The story is great, no doubt about that, but it is very linear. You can't roam the globe like you can in most RPGs. You can only visit the city on the continent that you are on (there are 3 continents total, divided by the Granacliffs). So basically, you can only do what you are suppost to. The story itself is both cheerful and depressing. Some parts are real tear -jerkers also. I won't tell you what parts because that would spoil it for you! LOL. The element of surprise is what is really good. Right when you think you are done, a new twist in the story takes place and you realize you have a LONG way to go.
The only thing that disappointed me about this title is it is kind of short. I beat it in 31 hours, but many of you could do it in under 30. Ubisoft could have made it a bit longer really.
My final opinion on this game is this game is the best turn-based RPG I have ever played. Period. If you are looking for a quick easy game to play, this is not the game for you. But if you are a hardcore RPG fanatics, then, by all means, BUY THIS GAME! It is definitely worth the price. Me and Sonym5 both have this game and we both loved it. We also both beat it around the same time, so talk to him if you don't believe me about this game. This is absolutely a must have, and the very first epic RPG to ever hit the wonderful machine, we lovingly call the Dreamcast!
